What happened on the night of December 2-3?
2-3 December 1984 was a dark night for Bhopal. The whole city was asleep. There was also silence in the Union Carbide factory. In fact, due to technical reasons, production at the factory was halted for a few days. But the factory’s 610 tanks contained toxic methyl isocyanide gas. Tank No. 610 of Union Carbide’s Plant No. ‘C’ started mixing with poisonous methyl isocyanide gas during the night. When the water mixed with the gas, a chemical reaction occurred and on the morning of December 3, the pressure caused the tank to open. Due to which the poisonous gas started mixing in the air and then the death spree started. The gas was so poisonous that a person could die in an average of 3 minutes. According to the statistics of the Indian Council of Medical Research, 3 thousand people have lost their lives in this tragedy. At the same time, many generations were exposed to this poisonous gas for years.
