He has achieved the first position by defeating Babar Azam. Gill has reached 830 rating points while Babar has slipped to second place with 824 rating points. Indian players currently dominate the ODI rankings. Gill is number one in batting and Mohammad Siraj is number one in bowling. However, during this period Shubman Gill could not break the record of legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni (MS Dhoni). Dhoni holds the Indian record of becoming world number one in the fewest innings.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni became number one in 38 innings while Shubman Gill took 41 innings to become number one. Gill is the fourth Indian to reach number one in the ODI rankings. Before Gill, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have been crowned number one in the ODI rankings. It has been a great year for 24-year-old right-handed batsman Shubman Gill.
