The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-In-C) of the Eastern Command Lt. Gen. Rana Pratap Kalita gave this information on Tuesday. He made this statement as 5000 refugees and 60 Myanmar Army soldiers who entered India from Myanmar were handed back to Myanmar last week.

Refugees entering India through Mizoram
Most of the refugees are entering India through Mizoram. Their tribes have strong ethnic ties with the people of Myanmar. Besides Mizoram, some refugees are also coming from conflict-torn Manipur. Myanmar shares a 1640 km border with northeastern states including Nagaland and Manipur.

The officer said, “We have recovered a lot of banned drugs and psychotropic substances from the people coming. So we are keeping a close eye on the drug smugglers. When the Myanmar Army soldiers are coming, they have to surrender their weapons. Only then. After proper identification, they are taken to the Moreh border (in Manipur). Then they are handed over to the Myanmar authorities.”

Regarding the ongoing violence in Manipur, the Lt. General said, “We have been successful in stopping the violence in Manipur to a large extent. But sporadic incidents continue to occur between the two communities. A political solution has to be found for this.”

Two people were killed by suspected members of Imphal Valley-based militant groups in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Monday, officials said. One of them was a security guard and the other was his driver. Both were shot.

On the whole issue, Lt Gen Kalita said, “There have been legacy issues between communities in Manipur. Now both communities are completely polarized. More than 4000 looted weapons are still in people’s hands. “They are being used. That is why violent incidents are happening.”
