Cairo. At least 43 people were killed in a drone attack on a market south of the capital Khartoum on Sunday, amid an ongoing conflict between Sudan’s army and paramilitary forces for control of the country. Workers and medical personnel gave this information. The Sudan Doctors Union said in a statement that more than 55 people were injured in the attack in the May area of Khartoum. The injured have been taken to Bashir University Hospital for treatment.
In footage posted on social media by the ‘Antirodh Samiti’, an activist group engaged in providing humanitarian aid, bodies can be seen wrapped in white sheets in the open premises of the hospital. The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) blamed the Sudanese Air Force for Sunday’s attack. However, it was not immediately possible to independently verify this claim.
Violence has continued since April, with conflict raging in many parts of the country
Violence has continued in Sudan since mid-April. There, tensions between the country’s army, led by General Abdel Fattah Burhan, and the paramilitary RSF, led by General Mohammad Hamdan Daghlo, escalated into fighting in April. The conflict has since spread to many parts of the country and Khartoum has become an urban battleground.
