Talks open to withdraw Indian troops: Maldives’ new president says

Muiz said that we want a bilateral relationship that is mutually beneficial.

New Delhi:

Maldives Newly elected President of (Maldives). Mohammed Muiz (Mohammed Muizu) has said that Maldives wants to be completely independent and will ask the Indian troops stationed here to leave. He also said that talks with the Government of India have started. Both New Delhi and Beijing are competing for influence in the region. In the election campaign, Muiz accused incumbent Ibrahim Solih of surrendering the country’s sovereignty by allowing India to exercise unbridled dominance over the country’s affairs and allowing the deployment of Indian troops.

Bloomberg reports According to Muiz, the newly elected head of the Indian Ocean archipelago, in a detailed interview with Bloomberg TV, there is an Indian military presence. He said that even if the soldiers were from another country, their reaction would have been the same.

Around 70 Indian Army personnel maintain the radar station and surveillance aircraft here. Indian warships also help patrol the Maldives’ exclusive economic zone.

Muiz said he has started talks with the Indian government on removing its military presence. He had already described those talks as very successful.

‘Indian soldiers will not be replaced by soldiers from other countries’

“We want bilateral relations that are mutually beneficial,” Muiz said. He said that Indian soldiers will not be replaced by soldiers from other countries. Asking India to remove military personnel does not in any way indicate that “I will allow China or any other country to bring their military personnel here,” he said.

Competition between China and India increased after Muiz’s victory

Muiz’s victory has intensified the battle between India and China for influence in the strategically important Indian Ocean. Successive governments have been leaning towards either India or China. Both Asian powers have invested heavily in upgrading the Maldives’ infrastructure and increasing credit as they compete with each other.
