The Israeli army said on Sunday that it had discovered the largest tunnel ever discovered in the Gaza Strip. Its size was so large that small vehicles could move comfortably inside the tunnel. The tunnel stretches over four kilometers and is 400 meters (1,300 feet) deep below the Arez border crossing, the army said in a statement. The Israeli military said it would have cost millions of dollars and taken several years to build. The project was led by Mohammed Yahya, brother of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar. who is believed to be the mastermind of the October 7 attack.

Many types of facilities have been seen in this tunnel. Along with drainage system, electricity, ventilation, sewerage and communication network, it also had rail facility. The tunnel’s floor is made of compacted soil while its walls are made of concrete. Army spokesman Lt. Col. Richard Hatch said that Hamas had invested a great deal of resources in the project and that its sole purpose was to attack the State of Israel and its residents. He said that this tunnel was deliberately built near the erase crossing.
It is noteworthy that on October 7, Hamas fired more than 5000 rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip in a few minutes. Hamas has named the operation against Israel the ‘Al-Aqsa Flood’. In response, the Israeli army launched Operation ‘Iron Sword’ against Hamas.
