The Test series will be played after the three-match ODI series between India and South Africa. It will start with the Boxing Day Test on 26th December while the second match will start on 3rd January. The Test series will see the return of players like Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, who were on break following the loss in the ODI World Cup final last month. India legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team has a golden chance to win the series in Africa.
Ravichandran Ashwin will also join the squad, while head coach Rahul Dravid has taken a break from the ongoing ODI competition to focus his full attention on the Test series. After the 8-wicket win over South Africa on Sunday, Gavaskar was asked if the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team could win the Test series in South Africa. Gavaskar has agreed to this. He believes India have a good chance in the absence of bowlers like Enrique Norrgia and Kagiso Rabada.
Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports, “Definitely, look at South Africa. They are without two of their best bowlers. Rabada and Narakhiya are not. This means that the Indian batting line-up, if they play sensibly, can easily score 400 runs or more. Yes, it will be a little difficult at first, when the ball is new and it bounces. But that’s the way it is in Test cricket. So you get five days. He has to bat well. If he continues to score 300 and 500 runs, it will give the bowlers a chance to all out South Africa in both innings.
He added, “I think this is probably the best opportunity. 2018 was where I thought he should have won. He really should have won in 2018. They missed out on winning the series in 2018.
