New Delhi:
An altercation between a couple on board a Lufthansa plane flying between Munich and Bangkok led to the plane having to land in Delhi on Wednesday. Official sources gave this information. Lufthansa flight number LH 772 was scheduled to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) at 10.26 am. Earlier the pilot of the aircraft contacted the ATC and informed them about the ‘situation’. The plane left for Bangkok after a delay of more than an hour. However, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel dropped the male passenger at the airport.
Sources said the situation on the plane deteriorated after a fight broke out between a German man and his Thai wife on board, after which the plane sought permission to land at the IGI airport, which was granted. An official said the wife first complained to the pilot about her husband’s behavior and said he was “threatening” her. The woman requested intervention. Lufthansa said in a statement that the flight had to land in Delhi due to an “unruly” passenger on board the flight.
The man has been handed over to the authorities, the German airline said. Bangkok flights will continue after a minor delay. The safety of our passengers and crew on board the aircraft is our highest priority.” According to sources, the 53-year-old German passenger allegedly threw food, tried to burn a blanket with a lighter, shouted at his wife and violated orders. The instructions of the flight crew were not followed and so the pilot diverted the aircraft and landed in Delhi and later CISF personnel landed the person.
He stated that the wife was traveling on a ticket with a different PNR and wanted to continue her journey to Bangkok. He said the woman had departed on a Lufthansa flight. The male passenger later apologized verbally for his actions and was given an Air India flight ticket to Bangkok by Lufthansa, a senior official said. He said he had departed from that flight at about 3 p.m.
