The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 is nothing short of a nightmare for the Sri Lankan team. Sri Lanka have won just two of eight matches so far and are out of the race for the semi-finals. Sri Lankan fans are very upset after their disappointing performance. The government has sacked the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC). At the same time, World Cup winning captain Arjun Ranatunga has been appointed as the new chairman of SLC. Ranatunga, who made Sri Lanka the world champion in 1996, has revealed his brilliant plan after becoming the chairman.
Ranatunga is in no mood to save a Sri Lankan team that has flopped in the World Cup. He feels that the players lack discipline. He also said that he wants to build a strong team, which was in his era. “I want to bring discipline and enable the players to reach the top,” Ranatunga said, as reported by the Daily News. This is not about individuals. It’s about building a strong team, just like in my playing days.”
Ranatunga further said, “I have seen the desperation among the Sri Lankan fans and their request for my service to cricket. It is my responsibility to take cricket into a new era. Sri Lanka have defeated Netherlands and England. At the same time, they have suffered losses at the hands of South Africa, Pakistan, Australia, India, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka will face New Zealand in their last league match on November 9.
Notably, Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has appointed a seven-member interim committee with Ranatunga as its chairman in the hope of bringing back the golden days of Sri Lankan cricket. According to Ransinghe, the committee will investigate corruption and fraud in recent years. The committee consists of two retired judges of the Supreme Court and one retired judge of the High Court. The T20 World Cup 2020 special audit report highlighted alleged cases of corruption, mismanagement and negligence by the board. The minister stressed the need for a transparent and thorough investigation.
