Narayanan Vijayaraj Elgaraswamy, better known by his stage name Vijayakanth, is no more in this world. His demise has sent shockwaves through southern politics and the film industry. Because he was not only an actor but also an Indian politician and the founder of DMDK. Actor and DMDK chief Vijayakanth died at the age of 71 at a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday. According to reports, actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth was on ventilator support after testing positive for Kovid-19.

A statement issued by the hospital said, ‘Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support after being admitted for pneumonia. Despite all the efforts of the medical staff, he died on the morning of 28 December 2023. Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for a routine health check-up. At that time, the party had said that Vijayakanth was healthy and would return home after a check-up. The DMDK chief was earlier admitted to the hospital on November 20. He was being treated for a respiratory illness in the hospital. Many South politicians and actors are shocked to hear the news of his demise. Recently, Khushbu Sundar also expressed his condolences for him.
Vijayakanth acted in 154 films
Vijayakanth worked mainly in Tamil cinema and won many awards for his performances. Vijayakanth’s journey in the public eye has been marked by his successful career in the film industry, where he acted in 154 films, and then entered politics. He is known for great films like Vaidehi Kathirunthal, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Poonthotta Kavalkaran, Senthoora Poove, Prashanik Raj, Gaityagam and Vanthaippola. His performance in these films was highly appreciated and won him several awards for best actor.

His political career peaked when he became the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. In recent years, Vijayakanth’s health has been a matter of concern, due to which he has withdrawn from active political participation. He was the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016.
Vijayakanth was a successful actor, producer and director before entering politics. He was the founder and president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party and served as a member of the Legislative Assembly for two terms representing Virudhachalam and Rishivandyam constituencies respectively.
