The Indian team has made it to the final after defeating Sri Lanka by 41 runs in the Super 4 match of the Asia Cup 2023. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team has made it to the Asia Cup final for the 10th time after defeating Pakistan and Sri Lanka within 24 hours. India registered their second consecutive win in the Super Four stage. After scoring 213 runs batting first, India wrapped up Sri Lanka’s innings for 172 runs in 41.3 overs. From India, Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets for 43 runs. For Sri Lanka, Dunith Velalege scored an unbeaten 42 while Dhananjay de Silva scored 41 runs. With this, Sri Lanka had to taste defeat after 13 consecutive wins in ODIs. Kuldeep took four wickets for 43 runs in 9.3 overs while Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets for 33 runs in 10 overs. Jasprit Bumrah got two while Mohammad Siraj and Hardik Pandya got one success each.
Batting first, India scored 213 runs in 49.1 overs in response to which the entire Sri Lankan team returned to the pavilion scoring 172 runs in 41.3 overs. The contribution of the bowlers as well as the fielding was important in India’s victory. Kuldeep Yadav, who picked up five wickets against Pakistan, also bowled brilliantly against Sri Lanka and took four wickets for 43 runs while Ravindra Jadeja, who failed to bat, took the wickets of captain Dasun Shak (9) and Dhananjay de Silva (41). Laker broke the developing dangerous partnership with Dunit Wellage (41) which eventually became a factor in India’s win.
Hardik Pandya played his role well in the middle overs. He bowled miserly and took the wicket of Mahish Thekshana (2), whose diving substitute Suryakumar Yadav took a brilliant catch at mid-on. Earlier, Jasprit Bumrah gave wings to India’s hopes by taking the wickets of Pathum Nisanka (6) and Kusal Mendis (15). Dimuth Karunaratne (2) was caught out by Mohammad Siraj off Shubman Gill.
Despite India’s victory, Sri Lankan all-rounder Dunit Wellage was the center of attraction throughout the match. Twenty-year-old Velalag not only played a vital role in restricting India’s innings to a low score by picking up five crucial wickets, but later also excelled with the bat and scored an unbeaten 42. He was declared player of the match. Earlier, useful innings from captain Rohit Sharma (53), Ishan Kishan (33) and KL Rahul (39) were seen amidst the lethal spin bowling of Dunit Wellage (5 for 40) and Charith Aslanka (four for 18). With the help of which India scored 213 runs in 49.1 overs.
