The war between Israel and Hamas has caused great loss of life and property. Police blocked protesters demonstrating outside the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Saturday, amid anger over the failure of deadly attacks by Hamas gunmen on communities around the Gaza Strip. Waving blue and white Israeli flags and chanting “Go to jail now!” Chanting slogans, thousands of people climbed the police barrier around Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem.

A survey shows that more than three-quarters of Israelis believe Netanyahu should resign. Indeed, Netanyahu has yet to accept personal responsibility for the failures that led to the surprise attack in which hundreds of Hamas gunmen stormed southern Israel on October 7, killing more than 1,400 and taking at least 240 hostages. Public anger has grown steadily, with many families of hostages in Gaza strongly criticizing the government’s response and demanding their relatives be brought home.

In Tel Aviv, thousands of people demonstrated with flags, pictures of some of the detainees in Gaza and posters such as “Free the hostages now at all costs”. Since the attack, Israel has stepped up air and ground attacks in Gaza, killing more than 9,000 people and reducing large areas of the enclave to rubble, according to health officials in the Hamas-run territory. Even before the war, Netanyahu was fighting corruption charges, which he denies, and pushing plans to curb the powers of the judiciary, which brought tens of thousands to the streets in protest.

On Saturday, a poll for Israel’s Channel 13 television found that 76% of Israelis thought Netanyahu, now serving a record sixth term as prime minister, should resign. While 64% people said that elections should be held in the country immediately after the war. According to the survey, when asked who was most responsible for the attack, 44% of Israelis blamed Netanyahu, while 33% blamed the military chief and IDF officers, and 5% blamed the defense minister.
