US President Joe Biden said the release of the first group of hostages by Hamas on Friday was just a “start” and that there was a “real” possibility of extending the temporary ceasefire in Gaza. Speaking to reporters in Nantucket, Massachusetts, Biden also said it was time to “renew” work to create solutions for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

The October 7 attack by Hamas prompted air and ground attacks by Israel, which has vowed to destroy Palestinian militants. Officials in the Hamas-run territory said the war in Gaza has killed nearly 15,000 people, including 6,150 children. According to Israeli officials, approximately 1,200 people were killed in Israel during the October 7 attack, most of them civilians, and approximately 240 people were taken hostage.
