A day after wrestler Sakshi Malik raised concerns over the upcoming junior national competitions, the government has suspended the newly elected Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) panel. The Sports Ministry statement also said that the newly elected body “seems to be under the control of former office bearers with total disregard for the Sports Code.”

The sports ministry said, “The functioning of the WFI is being run from the premises controlled by the former office-bearers. The alleged premises are the same premises where the allegations of sexual harassment of the players have been filed and the case is pending in court.”

The sports ministry’s stern rebuke comes days after former WFI chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh’s aide Sanjay Singh was appointed as his replacement in the elections to the country’s apex wrestling body. Six-time BJP MP Brijbhushan Sharan Singh had to step down after the country’s top wrestlers, including Sakshi Malik, alleged sexual harassment of women wrestlers.

Expressing disappointment over the election results, Sakshi Malik announced that she was retiring from wrestling. While interacting with the media, the 2016 Olympic bronze medalist put his shoes on the table and said that he wants a wrestler’s body to meet a woman’s head. But this did not happen. We fought, but if the new president was Brij Bhushan’s associate, his business partner, I quit wrestling.”
The sight of him crying while speaking to the media sparked outrage, with opposition leaders accusing him of protecting the ruling party MP despite serious allegations against him.
On the other hand, the new president Sanjay Singh said after his victory that he was close to Brijbhushan Sharan Singh and dismissed the allegations leveled against him.

Sakshi Malik said that he expressed concern over the venue of the Junior Nationals and said that he was getting calls from many junior wrestlers. She said on ‘X’, “I have decided to retire from wrestling, but I am worried since last night. What should I do with the junior women wrestlers who are calling me… Tell me that it is being said that the Junior National To be held from 28th and the new wrestling federation has decided to organize it in Nandani town Gonda. Sakshi Malik further said, “Gonda is the area of Brijbhushan. Now think how junior women wrestlers will go to play there? Is there no place in this country other than Nandani Nagar where civilians can be captured?”
