Blast in Indonesia: A sad accident has occurred in Indonesia today. A Chinese-funded plant exploded in eastern Indonesia on Sunday. At least 12 people were killed and 39 injured in the blast. The explosion occurred at 5:30 am local time.

The accident happened at a plant owned by PT Indonesia Tsingshan Stainless Steel in the Morowali Industrial Park, located in Central Sulawesi province, a spokesman for the complex said in a statement, news agency AFP reported. Spokeswoman Dedi Kurniawan said the current number of victims is 51 people. 12 people died in this incident. 39 people with minor and serious injuries are currently receiving medical treatment.

The statement said seven Indonesian and five foreign workers were killed in the incident. However, the nationality of the foreign employee is not identified. The official said preliminary investigations revealed that the explosion occurred during repair work in the furnace when flammable liquid caught fire and the subsequent explosion also ruptured a nearby oxygen tank.

According to the statement, the fire was successfully brought under control on Sunday morning. The company that manages the industrial park said it was deeply saddened by the disaster and said the bodies of several identified victims had been sent home. The island is the center of the mineral-rich country’s production of nickel, the base metal used for electric vehicle batteries and stainless steel, and Beijing’s increased investment has sparked unrest over working conditions at its facilities.
