Mumbai. Those who believe in themselves never fail. Despite all the difficulties and people’s criticism, he finds a way to success. Usha Uthup is a living example of this. Today is his 76th birthday. Born on 7 November 1947 in Mumbai, Usha took Indian pop, jazz and film songs to new heights. He also did playback singing in many films in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. But did you know, he was kicked out of the music class because his voice was not good. Even when she got her first chance to sing, she got involved in politics and she couldn’t sing.
In fact, when Usha was studying in Uthup School, she joined the music class because of her interest in music. But the music teacher kicked him out of the class because of his loud voice. However, years later when Usha sang on a stage and received a standing ovation, the same school present praised her.
Usha Uthup then told that music teacher that she has reached here only because of him. He kept faith in himself. Usha was very fond of singing. He never refrained from singing anywhere. He sang songs in many night clubs before and after appearing in films. He said in an interview that he only cares about singing. He can sing anywhere. Can sing between anyone.
Devanand gave Usha Uthup the first break. In fact, when Usha sang at Delhi’s Oberoi Hotel, some people from Devanand’s production company Navketan were present. Usha then started her Bollywood career in 1970 with Ivory-Merchant’s Bombay Talkies, in which she sang an English number to Shankar-Jaikishan’s music followed by ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’.
Earlier, Usha Uthup was to sing ‘Dum Maro Dum’ with Asha Bhosle for ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’. But due to the internal politics of the singers, they could not get to sing ‘Dum Maro Dum’. It was sung by Asha Bhosle. However, he got a chance to sing English poetry in the film.
