Despite Mathews’ pleas, Shakib did not withdraw his appeal.
New Delhi. Sri Lanka’s veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews was timed out in the match against Bangladesh (BAN vs SL). Meaning he returned to the pavilion from the crease without playing a single ball. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan played a big role in getting Mathews time out. Mathews termed Shakib’s action as shameful. However, Shakib on the other hand has no regrets about this. Shakib said after the match that it was as per the rules, so he has no regrets.
Angelo Mathews became the first batsman to be timed out in international cricket. The incident happened in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Mathews reached the crease in due time. As soon as he reached the crease and started wearing the helmet, the helmet strap broke. He gestured to fetch another helmet from the dressing room but it took more than two minutes. Meanwhile, Shakib appealed for time out against Mathews and was dismissed by umpire Marais Erasmus.

‘I Wasn’t Wasting Time’
Angelo Mathews said in the press conference after the match that the action of Shakib and Bangladesh was very shameful and he did not think any other team would have done this. According to Mathews, ‘I used to have a lot of respect for Shakib and Bangladesh but not anymore. I wasn’t wasting any time. Everyone could see I was at the crease but my helmet strap was broken. This is a simple case of equipment failure. The act of Shakib and Bangladesh is extremely shameful. It’s a shame if they want to play cricket like this. I don’t think any other team has done that. I also asked him to withdraw the appeal but he refused.
The Sri Lankan all-rounder also said that his team had video evidence that he had reached the crease in time and that the umpire should have sought the help of technology before giving him out.
‘We have video evidence’
Angelo Mathews said, ‘We have video evidence that I reached the crease on time. When I got to the crease I still had five seconds left. What can I do if there is a problem with my helmet after this? This is a question of player safety. If the wicketkeeper could not keep the wicket against the spinner without wearing a helmet, how could I face the bowler. The umpire should have used technology before giving me out. If the technology is available, it should be used.
‘I know him from under-19 days’
Meanwhile, Bangladesh skipper Shakib said that he has no regrets about his decision as it was as per the rules. Shakib said, ‘When the game was stopped, a fielder came to me and told me that we should appeal to the umpire because too much time has passed. We did this and the umpire gave him out. I know him from under-19 days. He came to me and asked me to withdraw the appeal. I told him I understand your situation. This is unfortunate but as per the rules. On a question related to sportsmanship, Shakib said that if this is the case then the ICC should change the rules.
This is Bangladesh’s first victory against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup. After this defeat, the Sri Lankan team is out of the race for the semi-finals in the ICC World Cup 2023.
