Hanih was close to Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin
Haniyeh came into the limelight in the late 1990s. Before the cleric was killed in 2004, he was the right-hand man of Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in Gaza.
After leading Hamas to victory in 2006, he was elected Prime Minister of Palestine. Haniyeh was elected leader of Hamas in 2017 and has largely controlled his group’s political activities from outside Gaza.
Israeli troops also discovered and destroyed a Hamas naval weapons cache today, the IDF said. The cache contained diving gear, explosive devices and weapons.
Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas in retaliation for the October 7 attack. The Hamas attack killed 1,200 Israelis, most of them civilians. Hamas also took about 240 people hostage, including the elderly and young children.
The Hamas-run Health Ministry has claimed that the death toll from Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip has now risen to more than 11,500, including thousands of children. He is demanding a ceasefire.
