Tulsi Meghwar, a resident of a village on the right bank of the Indus River, got her first taste of sports when she participated in softball trials when she was in the seventh grade. Now she is 21 years old and is in the national softball team of Pakistan. She is proud of being the first girl in her Hindu family to make a name for herself in sports. He is a very accomplished softball and baseball player.
According to Pakistan’s leading newspaper ‘The Dawn’, Tulsi, who is doing intermediate in pre-engineering from Kotari Girls’ College, says, “Most of the girls in my school and college are either married and are now taking care of their families. But she sitting and doing nothing.” Recalling her school days, Tulsi says that when she was studying in the seventh standard, a sports camp was organized in the school, in which she got a chance to participate. When Tulsi entered the world of sports, she did not know that baseball and softball were also sports and how they were played. Cricket is mostly played in Pakistan. According to Tulsi, when she participated in the camp, she learned that it is America’s national sport and that it is played globally. Tulsi has played National Games, two Sindh Games and three Local Olympics in baseball. He also has gold to bronze medals. Her achievement is making her community aware of girl child education.
“All the credit for whatever success I have achieved in life goes to my parents,” says Tulsi. His father allowed him to participate in sports trials at that time. Tulsi’s father Harji Lal is a journalist of Sindhi newspaper. “When I decided to educate my girls, the Meghwar community and even some members of my own family were very critical of me,” says Harji Lal.
“Our community is largely illiterate,” he said. Unfortunately, they have little desire to educate themselves. Sending daughters to school is considered a taboo in our society, but I am proud that my daughter is not only studying but also doing well in sports. Tulsi has gained recognition across the country because of the sport. Tulsi laments the lack of playgrounds in Pakistan. She says, “There is a need for healthy physical activity in our country, but little attention is given to sports from our government. There is a Ministry of Sports but it cannot help even with infrastructure for construction and maintenance of sports facilities at the district level.
